How Would You Rewrite It?

I was serving in the United States Air Force and had been assigned to a communications unit at Camp Humphreys, South Korea located in a small town called Anjeong-Ri.  My roommate Ryan and I were GenX fans and enjoyed watching and re-watching our VHS tape collections we'd shipped or had our family's ship for morale purposes.

Just before heading out for my assignment, I had purchased a new tower PC and immediately voided the warranty as I installed a WinTV card so that I could connect my VCR into the PC so that I had an all-in-one entertainment center.  In addition, I had several VHS tapes with copious episodes of The Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, Airwolf, the Three Stooges, the Little Rascals, and a variety of other shows in-between.

Shortly after receiving our billet, my shipment of the PC, VCR, and tapes arrived.  I promptly installed the entertainment system onto our combination bookcase and desk and began to watch the Dukes of Hazzard.  My roommate entered and saw me watching and was amazed that I had this idea.  He promptly wrote his family and requested that they ship him a few of his VCR tapes.  About a month later, we were watching the A-Team, MacGyver, and a few other 80s shows.

I set the scene up this way as I move along into an idea we had about midway through our assignment.  One weekend, we just started to chat about how we'd rewrite or add our own flavor to the 1980s world.  Before I share our idea, have you had any inspirational thoughts in how to write or, perhaps, rewrite a television show or movie?  Maybe create a movie from a television show?  Hollywood has with the emergence of pop culture and the fandom that continues to be captivated by titles such as The Transformers, G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters, Smurfs, Baywatch, and many more.

Ryan and I brainstormed a story based along Airwolf.  Now, before you scoff, hear us out and Hollywood, please receive this as our idea and equally as a pitch.  While many of the GenX, specifically Airwolf fans have mixed perceptions of the 4th season, Ryan and I had a unique approach into how St. John is rescued and repatriated back to the U.S.A.

The general premise is that Stringfellow Hawke and Dominic Santini have become dissatisfied with "The Firm's" lack of support in any intelligence to find POW/MIA St. John Hawke.  Stringfellow entertains and bounces off Dom to go seek and gather a mixed team of vigilantes and experts within their respective areas.  First, String seeks out the A-Team and signs them on.  Next, Dom is engaged with Devon Miles at a coffee house which enables the enlistment of Michael Knight and K.I.T.T.  Finally, a curious and overheard conversation with B.A. has Pete Thorton piqued which has him enlisting MacGyver and making contact with both String and Dom to offer their hand at the mission to get St. John and any other POWs that may be with him.

We still have a few milestones kept in our minds of the how this all transpires, however in the end it takes all of these 80s characters with a little entertainment as Murdoch pilots Airwolf (can you only imagine the howls of Murdoch) as a salute for helping to rescue St. John.  Think about the inventiveness of MacGyver combined with the A-Team which creates so many obstacles and sheer genius to pull this adventure together.

Do you have any ideas like this?  Would you be able to create an improved movie or television show from yesteryear?

  1. I used to rewrite stuff like that, I remember making up new characters for Power Rangers and Captain Planet when I was in high school.
